In 2008 because of the efforts of shoppers and retailers in the CORE we:
- Saved 2780 Trees, 4,359,976 L of water and 327 Barrels of Oil
- Prevented 9,812 Pounds of Air Pollutants
- and Conserved 491 cubic yards of landfill space and 670,841 Kilowatt-hours of electricity!

WHAT DO THE CORE RETAILERS DO TO HELP OUT
We throw away 25,000,000,000 Styrofoam coffee cups every year
- Starbucks and Second Cup both have travel coffee mugs ranging in price from $10-$30. If you are staying in the store to enjoy your beverage, they also offer ceramic cups vs. styofoam cups.

- Many of our retailers offer take home shopping bags made from material other than plastic! Holt Renfrew, Harry Rosen, Tristan, Aldo, Coles, Roots, Urban, Lacoste and Land & Sea offer paper or biodegradabl bags with every purchase. Le Chateau, Jacob and Vita Farm offer canvas bags for a minimal charge.

Seventy per cent (70%) of landfill waste could be either reused or recycled.
- Mall management has implemented better recycling options for office tenants and retail tenants including in mall recycling bins, and recycling pick up for electronic waste.
- Blacks has a process to ensure that no heavy metal waste goes into the water system.
- Wireless Wave, TELUS.Connect, Bell and Rogers recycle old cell phones

Many of the CORE retailers understand how important it is to live green.
- In the food court, and throughout the centres there are recycling bins for juice, pop and water bottles. We encourage all of our shoppers to use these instead of throwing recyclables in the garbage.
- Banana Republic and Harry Rosen both carry eco friendly lines. Banana Republic products which are made from sustainable fibers are marked with a green elephant icon. This applies to both clothing and packaging! And, their shopping bags, shoe boxes, gift boxes and price tickets all contain recycled material!
- Land and Sea carries an eco friendly cleaning line, just ask their friendly staff!
- Roots uses organic cotton and bamboo in many items in the store, even the tissue and shopping bags for items purchased is earth friendly, they dissolve in the sun after 10 days!
- Roots, Club Monaco and GAP email store discounts, and do not print them or mail out.
- Tristan orders many products here in Canada, which means less shipping and less packaging!
- Brass Monocle and Sunglass Hut recycle old glasses
- Aritzia has an eco friendly line called Community, featuring fibers such as organic cotton, hemp, and viscose from bamboo.
- Lacoste has started a “Save our Logo” campaign, and are donating a portion of their revenues to saving crocodiles and alligators.
- Tiffany Jewelry in Holt Renfrew has very high standards for what it means to mine ethically. They don’t develop new mines in areas of high ecological or cultural value, avoid mine drainage contamination, fund restoration and refurbishment where necessary, AND they have a commitment to upholding labor standards and human rights.
- Indigo gift cards are made in part by recycled plastics. They are also working on a program which allows the reader to learn the environmental paper data on a by title basis. This means that soon, you can know how much of the book you’re reading is made with reused fibers. Last but not least, Indigo donates its unsold books to literacy organizations in need. Just this year they donated over 34,000 books to various organizations.
- The Printing House is a tri-certified, meaning that the paper they used is from responsibly managed forests (no clear cutting!).
- Rocky Mountain Soap Co. is a 100% natural bath and body company, and because they are local, less pollution is created from transporting the goods.
Many of our retailers offer eco-friendly products, you just have to ask any of the knowledgable staff in store, or at the CORE Customer Service Centre.
